You will also be activating your muscle memory (this is how your fingers nowhere to go without you looking at the fretboard) and you will also be keeping your fingertips slightly hardened in the process.

Just practice for a few minutes on the days when you are too busy and then put more effort in on the days when you are able to do so. This is far, far easier than just missing days out completely and you will make much better progress might following this tip.

How Should I Care for My Guitar?

So, you’ve been out and bought yourself a shiny new guitar. How Should I Care for My Guitar?Fantastic! Congratulations to you I am very envious of that “new guitar” feeling. It is well worth making sure that you look after your guitar carefully so here are a few tips for you to do so.

  1. Cleaning your guitar

Just about all of the many professional products which are available to help you clean and polish your guitar should be perfectly safe to use. In general terms, I would make sure that you avoid using any kind of soap on your guitar or anything that is harsh abrasive. Also, the newsagent fingers got a lot of water on it because this can save into the ward and raise the grain. Best to make sure you use the proper cleaning materials, to be honest.

Like always, always, always clean my guitar thoroughly when I change the strings. It’s the only chance that you’re likely to get so that you can clean all the difficult to get to places. It’s quality satisfying job and it really doesn’t take long to do. I normally use household polish which helps keep off the dust and also makes the guitar shine quite nicely and adds a protective layer to avoid scratching.

Make sure that you will hard along the frets and get all the grime from behind the metal parts for it content to build up. One great tip is to make sure that you always keep a perfectly dry and clean cloth with your guitar and always wipe the strings and the rest of the guitar down whenever you finish playing. This helps to keep the strings in very good condition, in particular, and they will last a whole lot longer, sound better and also stay in tune better.

  1. Keep your hands nice and clean

It always amazes me that even the slightest  little bit of Greece from our skin can have quite a devastating effect on the strings and even guitar itself. The strings deteriorate really quite quickly if you leave the graceful your fingers on them so it’s always worth giving your hands washed shortly before playing. And remember that tip I gave earlier about wiping down your strings when he finished playing. It truly does make a world of difference to how long the guitar strings last.

  1. Your guitar’s environmental climate

What is a wonderful material and is the basics of every great guitar. One of its downsides is that it has a tendency to be highly affected by the amount of humidity and temperature in which it is kept. Sudden changes in temperature or humidity can have quite a devastating effect upon your guitar so always use a hard case when transporting it and try to avoid those changes in environments such as possible.

Never, ever leave your guitar in a car when the weather is hot. It can be a disaster. Similarly, direct sunlight when the guitar is inside the house can affect your guitar gradually over a period and affect its paint job or, worse, potentially cause the wood to bow potentially ruining the guitar. Finishes can crack which ruins the aesthetic effect of the instrument.

Oh, and remember, keeping your guitar in a hard case will also protected against bumps and knocks which can happen accidentally when you’re carrying it around even a short distance.

Now, please, remember that the lovely warm feeling you have when you first take home your brand-new guitar. Take a few moments to look after it and it will last you a lifetime and you will gain instant pleasure from it.

How Often Should I Practice Playing Guitar?

How Often Should I Practice Playing GuitarYou need to spend time regularly doing something in order to develop a new set of skills if you’re going to get good at anything. Basically, you need to pick up your guitar and play every day. No, you do not need to spend hours upon hours practising each and every day but you need to be aiming for around 30 minutes or longer on a regular basis. You do not need to do that in one session every day you could do to lots of 15 minutes, instead. This would be a very good idea when you first starting because your fingers may get a bit sore when you first start practising to play the guitar.

You will, of course, end up not being able to play on a certain day every now and then. You might even after miss more than one day for some reason. Don’t worry it’s not the end of the world. Just plan on playing this on as many days as you can on a regular basis rather than playing for long periods at the weekend all in one go.

One tip is to take hold your guitar before you go to bed and view things for five or 10 minutes because this will help to keep your fingers nice and firm, help your muscle memory and also remind you of all the things that you have learnt.

A further idea is to make sure that your guitar playing and practising becomes productive and enjoyable. A really good idea is to make sure that you get involved in some sort of guitar activity for regular commitment. The best example of this is to play with other musicians or perhaps you could start a band were playing a gig will go to guitar lessons for undergo a guitar theory course, for instance. It’s a good idea to play at Church or some other venue on a regular basis, if at all possible.

Not only will this increase your guitar playing time and skill and ability it will also mean that you will have more social interaction and gain friends as a result. After all, this is supposed to be a social and enjoyable activity.

What Are the Notes on a Guitar?

What are the notes on a guitar? So, just what are the notes on a guitar? Well, basically, they are the same as any other musical instrument. The Western style music which we use has seven major notes which are the most important ones to learn as these are crucial for tuning your guitar.

The most important primary guitar notes that you need to know are E, A, D, G, and B. I have given you these notes in the order in which they appear as open strings on the guitar starting with the lowest sounding note B.  Both the top and bottom strings are tuned to E.

Here is how your guitar is tuned;

The thickest string which sounds the lowest is tuned to E and then each string gets higher in pitch as you move from that string across to the highest sounding string which is the furthest one away from you as you strum. So, the lowest string is tuned to E and then the order goes on with the next string being choosing to A, then D, G, B and finally E again.

The other two major notes which are used on guitar are C and F. You need to press your finger onto the threats of the guitar in order to play these as they are not available as open strings on the guitar. It is a question of memorising which each note appears at what fret on which string across the whole of the fretboard of your guitar.

Now, are you feeling as though it is going to be a mammoth task in order to know what are the notes on a guitar when you look at all those strings and all those different frets? Well, it is not all that bad. First of all, you get exactly the same notes on each fret for the top and bottom E strings. So you only need to learn those ones once. The next good news is that the pattern of note is repeated over and over as you go up and down the fretboard which makes life a lot easier. Finally, each note is repeated at certain frets at certain points on guitar. So, for instance, each of the open string notes is repeated when you get to the 12th fret.

There are lots of ways in which you can memorise which strings have what notes at which fret. You will soon learn to pick up these little clues as you go along so please do not feel overwhelmed by having to learn all the guitar notes at different frets on different strings. You will pick it up quicker than you realise, I promise.

How Long Will It Take to Learn to Play the Guitar?

How Long Will It Take to Learn to Play the GuitarHow long will it take to learn to play the guitar? There’s a question which I see all the time! The problem is that I started to play the guitar over 30 years ago and am not sure how long to get going. One answer is “how long is a piece of string” but that isn’t really very helpful to you, I’m sure. The most common answer you’ll get is “it all depends on the student” which again,  isn’t very helpful.

I think that the most informed answer is that it will take you about three months. The next thing to say is that the answer also depends on what you mean by “How Long Will It Take to Learn to Play the Guitar?”  No, you will not be playing like Carlos Santana on She’s Not There in just three months. You will, though, be able to play some chords and knock out some songs by that stage if you have practiced regularly.

People often give up trying to learn to play the guitar joined the first three months. The guitar can seem quite awkward to learn to play at outset. After all, you are trying to get your fingers to move in all sorts of manners that they’ve never tried to do before. So yes, it can get frustrating painful and just plain irritating at first.

Let me reassure you by saying that this period of frustration will pass. The best thing to do is make sure that you play every day for at least 15 minutes for at least one week. This will develop your fingers and hands to the stage where there “muscle memory” starts to work. Your fingers will develop hardened tips and will stop hurting after this period and you will start to feel a little bit more comfortable about your guitar practice and playing a generally.

I believe that you can say that you are a “guitarist” if you can play the following chords cleanly and enjoyably – A, C, D, E, G, Am and Em.  You really can play quite a few songs if you know those chords and people will be able to see that you can play the guitar if you’re able to strum them and play songs with them.

The good news is that once you have got to that stage then you can start to build upon these basics and move forward in any direction you choose with your guitar playing. Three months of practising regularly is all it takes to give you the boost in confidence that you really can learn to play the guitar. So, get on with it!

How to Re-String a Guitar

Here is how to re-string a guitar. Start out by having a think about what size strings you want to buy How to Re-String a Guitarin the first place . Do you play in a normal tuning or do you use a lower tuning the normal? You should go for a heavier gauge string if you normally play in a lower tuning. This will mean that you’ll strings will be kept consistently tight and you won’t get an awful lot of excessive buzzing from the frets. Go for standard gauge strings if you are not sure what you want and you will soon learn what works for you.

You can restring the guitar quite simply by using three tools which you will find in just about every music shop. These are;

  1. String Winder
  1. Bridge pin puller
  1. Wire cutters

String winders come in manual or automatic versions. I find that the manual one works just fine. You only need the bridge pin puller for acoustic guitars.  Read on to find out more about how to re-string a guitar.

Sure, you can restring your guitar without using any of these tools but you will find life is an awful lot less frustrating in a great deal easier if you haven’t hand!

Start off by taking off your old strings. This is pretty straightforward as you just need to unwind them at the keys and carefully remove them. You will also need to use the bridge pin puller if you are taking strings off an acoustic guitar. This tool is used to remove the pain which holds in the string with the little plug just behind the sound hole. They tend to get quite stiff and this tool makes the job a whole lot easier than trying to do it by hand or with a pair of pliers as you can do some damage to the guitar if you do that.

I always give my guitar a really good clean once the strings are off. It’s the only way you can get to certain areas of the guitar and give them a really good clean.

Be methodical about putting the new strings on and start with the lowest sounding string. Place the strings anchor into the bridge hole and then add the bridge pin in the case of an acoustic guitar. Bring the strings up through the bridge hole on all other types of guitars and gradually stretch it and place it through the tuners at the top of the guitar neck.

Do not pull the string tight through the tuners but leave plenty of slack in the string, say, about enough for three or four winds of the peg. Make a bend in the string and take it backwards around the back of the peg (the opposite way to what you would imagine) and bring it round underneath where the string enters the tuner. Then starts to wind the string around on itself by holding the end of the string vertical from the peg so that it catches on itself as it winds around.

Tight in your string gently until it is just taught enough to hold in place nicely. Do not bring it up to pitch just yet, but repeat the process for all of the of the strings. We need to be nice and gentle with our guitar and bring them to the strings up to pitch gradually and evenly as there is quite a lot of stress on the guitar wants the strings in pitch. Bring each of the strings up to pitch once they have all been placed onto the guitar. Remove excess strings using your wire cutters.

That’s about it. Hopefully, you now know how to re-string a guitar. It is something of a learning process but once you’ve done it once or twice will find that changing strings are pretty easy job. It is well worthwhile making sure you’ve got several winds on the packs and that the string crosses itself as it winds and this will help string to stay in tune a great deal more. Also, it is a great idea to keep your strings in tune at all times and you can also keep them in much better condition and make them last an awful lot longer if you keep a cloth with your guitar and white strings down each and every time you finish playing. This removes finger grease from the strings which tends to make them deteriorate much quicker. Removing this finger grease with your cloth will enable your guitar strings to last a great deal more than would otherwise have been the case.

New To The Guitar – Pitfalls To Avoid

avoidng guita practise pifallsIt’s great when a new guitarist gets off to a flying start makes improvement and progress really quickly. However, it doesn’t happen to all of us. Here are some of the pitfalls that you can avoid so that you can learn to play the guitar as quickly and easily as possible when you are starting out;

  1. The It Will Do Syndrome

This is all easy to get into the habit of doing if you don’t quite spend long enough polishing the final four months of peace. You may even end up being happy with fairly untidy guitar playing and think that that will do.

It will not!

Please, please, please do not accept “it will do, it’s good enough” when you know that you can do better. Just push yourself a little bit into your uncomfortable zone and practice a little longer and get it right. You will be so pleased with yourself as a result.

  1. Never Getting to the Finishing Line.

It is really tempting to learn part of one song, the bit that you really like, and then failing to go on and learning the whole song. This can lead to you knowing an awful lot of the conflicts or partial songs that you are never going to be able to play along with other musicians as they will want to play the whole complete song from beginning to end.

This can become embarrassing for the guitarist who is asked to join in playing with the musicians on a popular song or a standard piece and then finds that they cannot do so. Make sure that you aim to learn to play the whole song all the way through from start to finish.

  1. Being Happy Is a Three Chord Bandit

We will know someone who calls himself a “Three Chord Bandit” because they only know the chords A D and E. Now, I quite accept that people are able to play a wide variety of songs with only three also chords. But the problem is that boredom will soon set in especially when all the songs are in the same key. This can be very dull!

Try to add new chords to your chord dictionary in your head on a regular basis. Why not try learning a new chord each time you pick up the guitar or twice a week or something like that. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you build a repertoire of interesting and useful chords to use in your playing every day.

  1. Always Doing What You Always Did

We’ve all done this. It happens because we really like a particular title genre of music and we tend to play that whenever we pick up our guitar to play. It’s just so easy to do this and it is more challenging to start playing a different type of guitar music. There is always something brand-new to learn to play on your guitar, a new song from a different genre, a new rift from a different type of music or to play in the style of a guitarist from a different band that you don’t have to listen to. It’s all good stuff so get out there and do it!

There is an incredible variety of music out there and I am constantly astonished at how the guitar can sound so different and so wonderful in so many different ways just by switching the type of music that I am playing.

We never would have got rock ‘n’ roll, country music, Jazz, pop music and so much more if people had only ever stuck playing to their original type of preferred music.

Mix it up and you will be inspired to practice and perform your guitar more often.

Tascam CDGT2 Guitar Trainer

Tascam CDGT2 Guitar TrainerThe Tascam CDGT2 is one of a line of products which have been invented by Tascam – the amazing electronics firm. This means that you can listen carefully and practice along to any type of guitar music that you are trying to learn.

In the old days, people used to use half speed tape players. But this is a whole lot better.

This is a very user-friendly Trainer. The Tascam CDGT2 has new functionality making it a breeze to use. I wish they made things like this when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have worn so many records out playing the same passages over and over and over.

One reviewer on Amazon said “This Tascam Guitar trainer is fantastic” and you have to agree because it allows you to dive into your CD collection, pop into the machine, and listen along. Sure, there are MP3 versions out there, but many guitarists have a big CD collection and this saves all the hassle of having to transfer the guitar music onto your PC and then onto your MP3 player.

It will even allow you to take the CDs from your music books so that you can instantly play along with the tracks that you are trying to learn from your guitar book.
